Living near the city of San Fernando

Being able to identify my origins of where I grew up, I always wondered “What is going on in my neighborhood?” Although I didn’t grow up in the San Fernando area code, I was able to attend school and create long lasting memories that I will one day share with future family members.

Through growing up in the neighborhood of Sylmar, CA, I had the opportunity to go to school in San Fernando since the age of 5. I attended one of the many private schools that were in the area and was also lucky to have my father work nearby at San Fernando High School. If we dive into the mass population of people who live in this city, we will find that a large Latino population resides in San Fernando coming from central American countries. It is with no surprise that the data analyzed shared that San Fernando has a high percentage of a latino population. With research provided by Census Reporter, 6,417 households with approximately 4 people living inside of them are either made up of married couples, male/female householders and non-family.

Below is a comparison between household incomes in Sylmar and San Fernando.

Through seeing both graphs of information from San Fernando and Sylmar, I noticed that the median household income does not have a drastic change as both locations have similar percentages in demographics. Sylmar has 96% of a Latino population while San Fernando has 97% Latino population.

What I found fascinating is that, although most families are not fully made up of U.S. citizens, the educational attainment has shown a high percentage of High school graduates and furthering their education with 15% of students receiving a degree .

I found it enlightening to find out about the city that I mostly grew up in as I spent most of my time doing activities in this area has this much information. Although both my parents immigrated to the United States at the ages of eight and 16, they were still able to adapt to the country’s methods in society. They instilled the importance of education and being able to be bilingual as it is important to communicate with groups of people who may not know the native language in the area.

Doing this research has allowed me to get to know my neighborhood through demographics, educational attainment, ethnical backgrounds and learning about the languages that are spoken throughout the city of San Fernando.
